We live in a media saturated world where we are constantly immerged in media 24/7. People no longer have any sense of the difference between real thing and images of them; whether it is a real experience or a simulation. Instead of media reflecting reality, media has become the new reality.
An example of a useful theory has come from two philosophers, Jean-Francis Lyotard and Jean Baudrillard. They believe that truth needs to be deconstructed so that we can challenge dominant ideas that we claim as the truth. There are competing versions of the truth.
Traditional media reflected social reality. Postmodern media is a reality. Anything can be art. the distinction between media and reality is no longer separate.
Products analysed as postmodern include, 9/11 attacks on the world trade center, The Matrix, Blade Runner, Big Brother, Mighty Boosh, Echo Beach/Moving Wallpaper, Grand Theft Auto IV, Disneyworld etc. They are postmodern because they are fictional worlds that are portrayed as real e.g.Disneyworlds based on fantasy but really exists. Also, real events can be blurred with dramatised scenes moulding reality and fiction into one and the same thing. Where does reality end and fiction start?
