Evaluation for my preliminary task ‘The Bitchnapper’.
For this task, I worked with two other students from my media class and we had to create a short film. This film had to include: dialogue and someone walking through a door. The shot requirements had to involve: ‘match on action’, ‘shot reverse shot’ and the ‘180 degree rule.’
As part of the planning process we created two storyboards of our film. One was drawn with pencil and the other was of photographs that we had taken ourselves. The storyboard had to include detail of the type of shots used and what would be happening in that shot.
We all decided on our story together and were happy with the idea. It was about a girl who had kidnapped a man and kept him in a room and had stolen his daughter. The film shots involved the girl walking through the door and walking over to the kidnapped man. The man is tied up and asks where his daughter is. With these shots we included, ‘over the shoulder shots’ for when there was dialogue so that you could see the person talking and the reactions they gave back. For when the girl walked we used a ‘panning shot’ that moved up her body from her boots and then a long shot to give the audience an idea of how the characters were placed in the room.
Showing the boots was important for us to include in this film. We thought it showed the character well as they symbolised power, femininity and control. We wanted the man to loose his stereotype and make him vulnerable by giving the girl the power.
When it came to editing we used the ‘I-movie’ program and we had to cut our shots down, put them in order and we were given a choice whether we wanted to put extras in e.g. credits, sounds effects. We had a problem when it came to saving because the computer crashed half way through. When we opened it again we found that it didn’t save our progress we had made with editing. We then had to quickly re-do the techniques we previously made so that we didn’t waste anymore time. This made the final film a bit disappointing compared to the first one, but we were all happy that we got it finished.
All of us gave input to the final editing and overall we felt it went quite smoothly. I was happy with how well we planned and organized it and I was pleased with the how well the group worked hard together to create our film.
